Host Plants (Milkweed): You must include at least 10 milkweed plants. While a single species is acceptable, they recommend using two or more species to provide variety in bloom times and leaf types.

Nectar Plants: Your garden must contain at least 4 nectar plants (annuals, biennials, or perennials). These should bloom at different times to provide a continuous food source throughout the breeding and migration seasons.
Shelter: Plants should be spaced close together (but not crowded) to provide protection from predators and harsh weather. This "shelter" is naturally created by the density of your plantings.
